Implementing modified activities for adapted physical education students (elementary, middle school, high school)

1. As a group, design 4 developmentally appropriate activities for elementary, middle school or high school students
2. As a class, implement all 4 activities within the time frame of the "Lumpkin County Fun Day"
3. Write a reflective paper evaluating the event, including your role and the activities, and indicating suggestions for future events

Description of Idea:

This activity follows a 4-week field expereince in which candidates were required to spend 4 hours each week in an adapted physical education setting to observe and assist students as needed; or in a general physical education setting working with a select student determined by the general physical educator.  The field experience included assigned article readings and written reactions, as well as,  journal entries addressing specific questions.  This activity is a celebration that allows the university class to "give back" to the students and teachers from the local schools who opened their classrooms to the university students.

1. Planning
Working with your assigned group (elementary, middle school or high school), create a Group Plan of at least 4 developmentally appropriate activites for the Adapted Physical Education students to perform in the university gymnasium.  School students will be at the university gymnasium for a full hour.  In addition to the 4 activities, be sure to include an appropriate warm-up and stretching session, as this will be their physical education class for the day.

f. Description of the activity

This information is due the class before the "Fun Day"

2. Implementation
On the day of visit, be sure to be prepared.  If you are leading an activity, take control and dtell non-group members how you need them to help.  If you are helping, take initiaitve and do what is needed

3. Follow-up
Write a reflective paper for each of the school visits.  Be sure to describe what you did each day and evaluate your role and the activities.  Also be sure to include your perception of the students' experiences and describe what you might do differently the next time, and why.  Conclude with a description of your personal benefits as a result of the time you spent with the school children.

Resources Needed:
1.Specific equipemnt to implement all of the activities
2. Gymnasium space to facilitate the use of wheelchairs, or to avoid bad weather conditions
3. Snacks (sugar-free and non-allergenic, based on individual needs)

Assessment Technique:

Written plan of 4 activities
Active participation on all scheduled "Fun Day"
Written reflective paper

Approximate time required:

Plan for 2 hours of in-class preparation in groups
Additional out of class time for university student preparation of activities
"Fun Day" time - at least one and 1/2 hour including set-up and clean-up
Additional out of class time for reflection
