Description of Idea:
|
Students are instructed to meet in the gymnasium, bring a videocassette with them, and be prepared for activity. They are not told what they will be doing. Upon arriving to class, students are handed a piece of paper with their name on it, and a skill and number beside their name. The instructions underneath inform students that in 5 minutes, the class will begin and they will have to demonstrate the skill assigned to them, in the pre-assigned order. They are to videotape their demonstration. The next class period, students meet in the classroom where a lecture discussing the qualities of a good demonstration is given. They are told to think back on their original demonstration as the lecture is being given. The students are then informed that the following class, they will again meet in the gymnasium to re-do their original demonstration. This second demonstration is again videotaped. In this way, students not only learn how to conduct a good demonstration, but they also experience first hand that they cannot ëwing-itî and must prepare ahead of time. |
Assessment Technique:
|
Students are provided with a demonstration form (the sheet was adapted from Randall (1992), Systematic Supervision for physical education and Rink (2006), Teaching physical education for learning). The form highlights a number of qualities of a good demonstration. With the assistance of the videotapes, the students must fill in the form ñ one for each demonstration. They are then to review both forms and write a critique on their two demonstrations. |
Approximate time required:
